An acme screw is a lead screw. Lead screws can have several thread types and acme threads are trapezoidal lead screw designs with a 30 degree offset. At Comptrol, we provide a number of trapezoidal lead screw options for our customers including threaded bars, nuts, and supports.
The kinds of applications you have at your facility will dictate the type of threads your acme lead screws require. For example, the direction of motion is important, and this will determine if you should have left or right-handed threads.
Stub Acme Threads
Stub acme is a modified acme thread and the profile is considerably shorter, hence the term "stub". Some applications require a thread that is shallower and coarser than a standard acme screw. In some cases, a stub thread application can interchange with a general purpose 2 G acme thread, because the pitch diameter allowances are the same.
In some actuator applications, a standard class G acme thread may wedge and a stub thread (with its lower profile) prevents this wedging because there is less clearance.
The Importance of Choosing a Size
At Comptrol we can provide acme lead screws as large as six inches in diameter and as small as 3/16.
Lead Screw Assemblies
We can manufacture, repair, and replace lead screws and entire assemblies. This includes the nuts and the kind of lead support system you need. Nuts can be made from a large variety of materials, including metal alloys, bronze, steel, Nylon, plastic and more.
